Shine Your Light

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”

Those simple words carry so much wisdom, even decades after they were first sung. In a world that often feels heavy, uncertain, or even dark at times, the reminder to shine your light feels more important than ever.

Your light might be your kindness.
Your faith.
Your compassion.
Your daily acts of grace.
Your willingness to keep showing up.

When we take care of our own light, we not only uplift ourselves — we become a steady source of inspiration, comfort, and hope for others.

Today, be reminded about how we can both care for our light and share it with the people who need it most.

What Does It Mean to “Shine Your Light”?

The light inside each of us is a reflection of who we are: our values, our faith, our small daily actions that ripple into the world.

It’s a simple metaphor, but incredibly powerful. During the Civil Rights Movement, This Little Light of Mine became an anthem of courage. Even in the face of injustice and fear, people sang these words as a promise:
We will not hide our light. We will not give in to darkness.

Today, we may not be facing those exact same struggles, but the world still needs people who are willing to shine their light — especially during times of uncertainty.

First Take Care of Your Own Light

Before you can shine for others, you need to protect and nourish your own light. You cannot share your light if yours is dimmed. So replenish you first.
Here are simple, soulful ways to care for your light:

1️⃣ Create Quiet, Soulful Spaces

Small rituals help anchor your day.

  • Light a calming candle
  • Nourish your body and add water
  • Spend a few moments journaling your gratitude or intentions and that will help focus your thoughts, your actions and your words.

My favorites:

I personally love the Bath & Body Works Candles ( Anything with vanilla works for me.It makes my entire space feel grounded and peaceful). I have recently tried the White Magnolia and it may be my summer “go to”. They are expensive and I do wait for sales to get the best deals.

IIf you’re shopping online, Amazon has beautiful alternatives: I love the Yankee candle range from Amazon. They are awesome and perfect for gifting and fast delivery.

Shine Your Light by writing in your journal or gifting journals to others

For journaling I have bought the Hobby Lobby small notebooks for my purse – I like to be able to make notes during the day about the things that l am grateful for. I normally wait for the twice a year sale at Hobby Lobby and then buy 24 at a time and gift them all year. Thats one of my “share my light” gift for others.

I do like these small sketchpads from Amazon with the spiral binders. They are a great size for your purse and what I love the most is because they are on a ring binder, it is easy to tear out the page and pin on my notice board in my bedroom or above my desk when I see a great quote or want to remember something I love, or have heard on a podcast. I prefer sketchbooks because I don’t want the lines if I am drawing or making messy notes. The paper is really good quality too.

2️⃣ Feed Your Mind and Spirit with Goodness

What we consume emotionally shapes how we feel.

  • Choose books that inspire growth and peace
  • Listen to podcasts or devotionals that speak to your Soul
  • Limit media and people that drains your energy

Some of my go-to favorites include:

3️⃣ Rest and Recharge Your Energy

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

  • Take time out to walk in the sunshine, read a book, listen to a podcast.
  • Use essential oils and diffusers to create a calming environment
  • Surround your personal space with things you love.

Soulful self-care items I love:

4️⃣ Make Gratitude a Daily Habit

Gratitude helps reframe even difficult days.

  • Write down 3 things you’re thankful for
  • Use a journal or chalkboard as a visual reminder of your blessings

Helpful tools:

  • Whiteboard for Daily Intentions – I have a 24 inch one but there are smaller ones if you don’t have the space or want something more compact. I do have a TIP: Do not hang it on a wall where you cannot stand directly in front of it to right. I had mine set above my kist and that was disastrous. I never wrote on it because it was too far to right comfortably. As soon as I moved it, it became my daily spot to post my gratitude.

How to Shine Your Light for Others

Once your own light is strong, it naturally spills into the lives around you.
Here are small ways to uplift others:

  • Offer encouragement: A text, a kind word, or a compliment
  • Show up: Be present when someone needs you
  • Practice active listening: Let people feel seen and heard – do not tell them your story
  • Take simple actions: Drop off a meal, run an errand, or pray for someone quietly or with them
  • Stand for what’s right, even when it’s uncomfortable

You never know how one small act of kindness can create a ripple in someone else’s life.

The Universal Message Shining Your Light

Even though This Little Light of Mine has deep roots in Christian tradition and the Civil Rights Movement, its core message is beautifully universal.
The world needs your light.

  • Your hope
  • Your resilience
  • Your kindness
  • Your ability to inspire and uplift, even when times feel uncertain

When we intentionally protect our light, we’re far more able to share it — and the more light we spread, the brighter the world becomes. S
